Haiti Earthquake in Haiti – DFO (NCR) Fundraiser

On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by several powerful aftershocks, struck off the western coast of Haiti.  The death toll from Haiti’s earthquake is currently reported at between 45,000 and 50,000, with a further 3 million people hurt or homeless.

Emergency fundraising efforts are underway all over the world and across the country and now the Federal government is offering to match contributions dollar for dollar up to a maximum of $50 million.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada NCR is partnering with the Canadian Red Cross to help raise funds towards the Haiti Earthquake relief efforts.

Should you wish to donate, DFO staff members will be on-hand in the lobby of 200 Kent Street from January 19-20th, 2010. Contributions will be accepted in the form of cash or cheque.  For those who wish to receive tax receipts for your donation, your personal information will be taken down and the Canadian Red Cross organization will issue official receipts by mail.  If you wish to donate using your credit card, an online payment option for DFO employees of the NCR will be made available shortly. In the meantime, should you wish to contribute using a credit card, please visit the Canadian Red Cross online payment form at:

In addition to the Canadian Red Cross, many other organizations are also accepting donations towards Haiti relief efforts.  For those staff who wish to donate elsewhere, you may wish to consult a searchable list of registered charities in Canada by visiting the CRA Charities Listings or calling 1-800-267-2384.  Before you give, ask if the charity is receiving donations in response to the January 12 Haiti earthquake.
